Aknystėliai hillfort

Aknystėliai hillfort is in the territory of Utena district municipality, in Leliūnai neighborhood, nearby Aknystėlė village.

The hillfort was built on the southern bank of the lake Aknystėliai. The site of about 20m long, and 15m wide. The slopes are steep, about 10m high. The hillfoot is surrounded by the lake, railway embankment and lowlands of the lake banks.

The southern part of the hillfort was dug off in 1899 for the narrow gauge railway Švenčionėliai–Panevėžys, thus the original appearance of the hillfort is unknown. In 1985 during the reconstruction of the railway into the wide gauge one (the reconstruction was incomplete), the top of the mound was levelled off by 2m. What remained was the foundation of the mound of the hillfort, 57x27m in size. 400m to the north-west there was a burial place with a grave from the Vth century.
