Ąžuolinis

Ąžuolinis is a lake in Utena district, 5.5 km east of Daugailiai. Its length from the north to the south is 0.56 km, width up to 0.32 km. Banks are low, entirely overgrown with trees. The lake is surrounded by Ąžuolynas, Girelė and Eglės woods, only on the eastern bank there is the village of Vajasiškis and the road Lukošiūnai–Paberžė–Šlepečiai goes by. The lake does not drain, belongs to Šavaša basin which is an inflow of Šventoji.

The lake‘s area is 13.1 ha, it‘s in Daugailiai eldership, and directly to the north from it there is a lovely small village Šlepečiai. It is not known why the lake is called Ąžuolinis (oaken), because you can hardly find such trees on its banks. It could be guessed that in olden times priestesses burnt fires under centenarian oaks. The location is expressively hilly, between arable fields there are small woods of mixed trees preserved. This lake is also not an exception. Entirely overgrown with bushes and black alders with an exception of several small gaps on the eastern side, so if you wish to go fishing there, look for somebody to borrow a boat from or take your own one. The shape of the lake is nothing special, prolonged, with an exception of a small horn in the west of the lake. The lake is very shallow: during the spring flood 2.0 m deep, in summer gets to 1.5 m. Being a shallow lake it freezes first in winter among other lakes in Utena district, which is what attracts. When the lake is covered with the first ice, attempts could be made to lure basses. At this time fishermen have missed for ice fishing that they don‘t care about the size of fish. One has to catch at least 30 of them so that it weighed 1 kilogram. The bottom is as flat as a board, not a single pit can be found, so you have to chase basses in the whole lake. When winter is in its full swing, ice becomes thick and hard, there is shortage of oxygen, basses become apathetic and don‘t care about bait nearly until spring. On the bottom a soft and thick layer of slime is forming.

Here tench, roach, rudds and bleak can also be caught. Local people have tried to stock the lake with silver carps, carps, breams and pikes.  Unfortunately, peaceful fish didn‘t find favorable living conditions and disappeared without a reason. What makes comfort is the fact that there are really enough pikes. According to local fishermen, pikes do not grow larger than 3 kg, thus the lake is not suitable for breaking personal records. Nearby there is Paneikiškis lake and its „grandson“ Paneikiškaitis.
