Bikūnai hillfort

Bikūnai hillfort is in the territory of Utena district municipality, south of Bikūnai, Sudeikiai neighborhood. Accessible by the road Sudeikiai–Bikūnai, 1km before Bikūnai turn right southward and then by a newly-laid road for about 400m to the homestead and from there walk for about 900m south-eastward through the fields overgrown with bushes; you need to cross the height and behind it, into the bushes turning into the forest, about 1.2km from the gravel road.

The first Bikūnai hillfort was built on a separate hill, 2.4km south of the second Bikūnai hillfort. The site 50x22m. The slopes are steep, 10-12m high.  

In the slopes fragments of brushed and smooth pottery were found. The hillfort is severely damaged by ploughing.  

At the eastern foot there was a foot settlement of the area of 0.3ha.  

The finds discovered during archeological excavations are kept in the Lithuanian National Museum. The hillfort dates back to the I millennium BC – the beginning of the I millennium AD. The area of the monument territory 1.5ha.

Bikūnai hillfort is called Graves Mountain because there used to be the graves of giants and people used to be bigger. But because bears started to dig graves out, they were transferred to the village. The skulls were big.
