Daugailiai hillfort

Daugailiai hillfort is in the territory of Utena district municipality, on the northern outskirts of Daugailiai, 150m north of Daugailiai church.  

The hillfort‘s 15–18m high hill with steep slopes is surrounded by the swamp. The site 40 x 30m, partially damaged while building Daugailiai church, which used to stand on the hillfort till 1766 and the dead were buried in the churchyard. Some remains of the cultural layer have remained. At the north-western foot of the hillfort there was a settlement.  

During archeological excavations molded fragments of brushed and smooth pottery were found, as well as foundation stones of the church of the XVIIIc., a grave and a Curonian shilling dating back to 1764.  

In 1254 Daugailiai castle was mentioned.    Until 1685 Daugailiai church had been built on the hillfort, which was burnt by lightning in 1766.  In the XXc. after the war people used to be buried in the hillfort. In 1990 a cross was erected in the place of the church.
