Dryžiai hillfort

Dryžiai hillfort or Saldutiškės hillfort is in the territory of Utena district municipality, south of Dryžiai village graveyard, 350m north of the railway Utena-Švenčionys, 250m south of the highway Utena-Švenčionėliai.

The hillfort is a prolonged hill surrounded by swampy ravines. The slopes are steep, 8–14m high.  The site 56 x 34m; there are traces of a cultural layer. It is thought there to have been a rampart on the eastern end. On the eastern and western slopes of the hillfort, 2–3m below the site there are terraces 34m wide and 28m long. At the northern and eastern foothills there are remains of the ancient settlement.  

During archeological excavations molded fragments of brushed pottery and some iron slag were found.  The finds are kept in the Lithuanian National Museum. The hillfort was used in the first half of the I millennium.

It is said that this hillfort was poured using soldiers’ hats and that under the hillfort there is a church buried.
