Gaižiūnai hillfort

Gaižiūnai hillfort, Hill of Peace, is in the territory of Utena district municipality, Gaižiūnai village, Leliūnai neighborhood. Accessible from the center of Gaižiūnai village walking north-westward for 200m where a small hill is seen.  

The hillfort was built on a separate hill, connecting with an adjacent height on the north-western side, 750m south-east of the south-eastern bank of the lake Talis, 450m north-east of the left bank of the rivulet Talis. The site 35x23m, with inclining edges. The slopes are steep, 5-7m high, those of the north-western side only 2m high. In the eastern slope two fragments of molded pottery were found, kept in Utena local history museum.  

At the end of the XIXc. – beginning of the XXc. the hillfort was damaged by a resort and later pits for keeping potatoes were dug in the slopes. The hillfort dates back to the I millennium BC – the beginning of the I millennium AD. The area of the monument territory 0.7ha.
