Jotaučiai manor

The manor is located on the left side of the highway Utena-Zarasai, behind the village of Vaikutėnai. In the XVII-XIXc. it was owned by the Kozielos-Poklevskiai together with Degsnys and Kastulynė (1240 tithes of land). It belonged to Utena parish (now Utena neighborhood). In Jotaučiai manor there were 550ha of land. In 1853 in the estate there lived 9 inhabitants, 3 of them were hired workers. In 1869 there lived Mataušas Sokieškis with farmhands and servants. In 1897 the manor still belonged to Tamošius Koziela (Kozello), and the manager was Ad. Šeduikis. There lived about 70 people. In 1897 there lived 11 families (56 inhabitants). In the manor there always used to stay at least 4 farmhands, a lot of servants, day laborers (10 kopecks with meals). In 1914, during the war the landlord, while retreating to Russia, ordered to roll over crops, to sell the cattle. The manor was managed by a steward; during the war the barns were converted into a hospital for horses. There lived Germans for whom people worked. In 1919 in the manor the was Bolsheviks’ committee. In 1920 Koziela came back, he was given 80ha of land and the rest of land was given to volunteer soldiers – Aismantas, Jovaiša, Labeikis. In 1940 only 9ha of land was left for the landlord, who settled in the house for farmhands and the rest of the land was divided among 5new settlers. In 1941with German occupation the land was returned to the landlord. In 1947 Koziela left for Poland. In the manor homestead there has remained the palace of red bricks (now there is a culture house and a shop), the barns and the house for farmhands.
