Raudys

Raudys is a lake in eastern Lithuania, Utena district, about 5 km south of Utena. Length from west to east 0.96 km, width up to 0.32 km. The north-east and south-west coasts are steep. The shores are surrounded by a narrow strip of trees and shrubs. In the south-west there is the Ąžuolija forest, on other shores there are meadows and cultivated fields. In the middle there is an islet of 0.08 ha. In the south, a stream flows towards the Vyžuona tributary called Vieša.

The villages of Paraudė and Vareikiai are located by lake Raudis. The Utena-Švenčionėliai railway runs near the western shore, and the Vieša stream flows from the eastern side.

Legend about lake Raudis

From the Devil’s bowl, the fairies walked through the Utenėlė mound to the lake and wept there. That lake was called lake Raudis (means weeping).
