Rukliai hillfort

Rukliai hillfort with a settlement, Kliedkalnis, is in the territory of Utena district municipality, north of Rukliai, Daugailiai neighborhood. Accessible from the road Radeikiai – Sudeikiai turning right at the two-storey brick building on the right, eastward, going along the path and after 800m keeping to the left.  

The hillfort was built on a separate hill. The site 25x16m. On the south-eastern slope 2m below the site there is a triangular terrace of 16x16m, descending by 1.5m south-eastward. The slopes are steep, 15m high.

The hillfort is severely damaged by ploughing, lies waste; on the south-eastern slope and on the site single birch trees grow.  

At the northern foot in the area of 0.5ha there is a foot settlement where smooth pottery was found.   After archeological explorations the finds are kept in the Lithuanian National Museum. The hillfort dates back to the I millennium BC – the beginning of the I millennium AD. The area of the monument territory 2ha.
