Sūngailiškis hillfort

Sūngailiškis hillfort with a settlement is in the territory of Utena district municipality, Sūngailiškis, Leliūnai neighborhood. Accessible from the highway Utena–Ukmergė, after Antalgė past the valley of the lakes Apšlavas – Ilgis, turning right northward to Stabulankiai, after 650m turn left, 50m in the south-west.  

The hillfort was built on a separate hill. The site 34x20m. On its south-eastern, southern and western edges there is a ditch,1m wide, 0.2m deep, behind which there is a rampart, 39m long, 1m high, 4m wide. The slopes are steep, 5-11m high.

On the south-western edge of the site there is a pit. The hillfort is overgrown with mixed forest.  

Around the hillfort in the area of 1 ha there is a foot settlement where brushed and smooth pottery was found.  

After archeological explorations the finds are kept in the Lithuanian National Museum and Utena local history museum. The hillfort dates back to the beginning of the I millennium. The area of the monument territory 2.1ha.

Legends about Sūngailiškis hillfort 

1. Sūngailiškis hillfort was poured by serfs. They brought earth with gloves and in their pockets since such was the landlord’s order. Earth was brought from far away so that there wasn’t a pit near the hillfort.

2. Once there lived landlord Pamarniackas who was very cruel and punished people for the least crime. As punishment, men and women were forced to carry earth and pour it in one place. And so over a long time they poured this hillfort.
