Vosgėliai hillfort

Vosgėliai hillfort with a settlement is in the territory of Utena district municipality, north of Vosgėliai village, Leliūnai neighborhood. Accessible from the highway Utena–Pakalniai, in the valley on the left at the beginning of collective gardens turning left southward, keeping to the left for 300m, on the hillock going right westward up to the water tower, 50m from which turn right northward behind the northern boundary of the collective gardens.  

The hillfort was built on a small hill, on the right bank of the rivulet Utenaitė, on its bend. The site 12m long, 13m wide. The slopes are steep, 10m high.

The bigger part of the hillfort from the north, west and east sides (in the east only the slope) has been washed away by the Utenaitė, on the north side only declining ridge 35m wide has remained – the detail of the foundation of the hillfort. The hillfort is overgrown with deciduous trees and thinned underbrush.  

At the southern foothill in the area of 0.4ha there is a foot settlement where molded pottery was found.  

The hillfort dates back to the I millennium. The area of the monument territory 0.7ha.

Legends about Vosgėliai hillfort 

1. It is said that a church is buried under Vosgėliai hillfort. In ancient times it was poured over by giants. There used to be a hole on the hillfort. Once when shepherds were herding of the hillfort, they took some threads from their whips, weaved them into one and lowered one shepherd into the hole. When they pulled him out, he took a lot of money with him. When the shepherds tried to lower another one, they pulled him out without his head.

2. In the place where there is Vosgėliai hillfort now, earlier used to be a church.  Devil disliked it a lot and he wanted to pour it over. So by digging earth he dug out the whole lake nearby. Devil poured over the church but he had difficulty in hiding its door. Therefore, he took a big rock and thought of blocking up the door. But at that time a rooster sang, the rock dropped out and got stuck into the slope of the mountain.
